Bottled Water
Bottled water is often assumed to be safer than tap water, but most bottled water does contain microplastics. Research over the last few years consistently shows tiny plastic particles in many bottled water.
What microplastics are
- Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters.
- Even smaller pieces called nanoplastics can be thousands of times smaller and harder to detect.
- They often come from the plastic bottle itself, the cap, or the manufacturing and bottling process.

- A 2024 study by researchers at Columbia University using new detection methods found:
- Up to 240,000 plastic particles per liter in some bottled water.
- About 90% were nanoplastics (extremely tiny particles).
Tap Water
Tap water can also contain microplastics, Common Tap Water Contaminants are:
Nitrates, pesticide residues, trace metals (lead, nickel, iron), chlorine by-products, bacteria indicators, and emerging contaminants such as PFAS and microplastics.
Ways to reduce exposure
Contaminants, microplastics and PFAS (known as forever chemicals, break down very slowly and remain in the body for years). Once PFAS enters the water source, they are very difficult to remove in treatment works.
How to fix these issues
- Drink filtered tap water (especially with reverse osmosis filters) with UV. The units we sell are 6 stage and have UV and the water is clean and free from most if not all of the contaminants listed above.
