Sweetners
Artificial sweeteners have been studied for decades, but are they all safe to consume?
- Aspartame – In 2023, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” (Group 2B).
- Saccharin – Most Consider safe
- Sucralose – New studies are highlighting concerns but human evidence is still inconclusive.
- Stevia – Many consider as Safe
Epidemiology v Causation debate
Observational research suggests artificial sweetners might increase cancer risk, but although it may look to be an association it might be because those who eat sweetners already have health risks. More work and human studies are required in order to clarify the situation.
